This project came about as a result of earthquake insurance settlements for the Parklands Bowling Club and the Parklands Rugby Club.
"My Sincere Thanks to you all – my job has been the easy part – you guys have done an incredible job and we are so pleased that we have got it up and open!!"
Andrew Weastell, Chairperson of Pūkeko Centre Committee
This project came about as a result of Earthquake insurance settlements for the Parklands Bowling Club and the Parklands Rugby Club. Both parties saw an opportunity to collaborate to construct a multi-use community sports facility by combining resources. The project was also funded by Christchurch City Council and other funders via grants processes such as Rata Foundation and Lotto.
We have worked with our client over the course of a 7-year process to assist with project planning and construction in stages in accordance with their budget.
Galletly Builders played an integral role within the project team, using our construction knowledge and quantity surveying resource to divide the project into construction stages to match available funding.
We then managed the compliance process so that the building could be used at each stage of the 3 stages of completion, while funds were gathered to complete the next stage.
A redundant building from Freeville School was transported to site in three pieces, which we then joined and fitted out to be fit for purpose as the new Clubhouse. The open shell became a space with a combination of large and small meeting spaces, with bathroom, kitchen and bar facilities.
We then constructed a new sports hall, with timber portals, insulated panels, Kingspan roofing, kitchenette, acoustic ceiling tiles, new services and finished with a multisport performance sports floor.
We later constructed a Breezeway link, to join the sports hall to the Clubhouse containing offices, changing rooms etc. – creating one facility.
The facility is in high demand from local schools, sporting and community organisations – as well as the members of the Bowling and Rugby Clubs who are loving their improved facilities.
The Pukeko Centre has become a significant asset to the Christchurch East Community, and we have taken great pride and pleasure in bringing it to life.
